Game Playing Guide
Welcome to Unreal Tournament! This guide is designed to help new players get set up and start playing as quickly as possible. Follow these steps to get into the action.
How to Install the Game?
- First, you need the base game. Go to our Downloads page and get the "Unreal Tournament GOTY".
- Next, download the latest community patch, "OldUnreal Patches", from the same Downloads page. This is essential for playing on modern systems and online.
- Run the installer for the base game (e.g., `Setup.exe`). Follow the on-screen instructions. We recommend installing to a simple directory like
C:\Games\UnrealTournament
. - Run the installer for the OldUnreal patch. When prompted, make sure you point the installer to the directory where you just installed Unreal Tournament.
- Once both are installed, you can start the game by running
UnrealTournament.exe
from the game's `System` folder.
How to Join a Server?
There are two primary ways to join an online server:
- In-Game Server Browser: From the main menu, go to
Multiplayer > Find Internet Games
. A list of available servers will appear. You can click the column headers to sort by server name, player count, or ping. Double-click a server to join. - Open Console Command: If you know the server's IP address and port, you can join directly. Press the tilde key (
~
) to open the console, then typeopen IP:PORT
(e.g.,open 144.24.114.10:7777
) and press Enter.

Basic Gameplay & Movement
Unreal Tournament is a fast-paced arena shooter. Here are the basics:
- Movement: Use
WASD
to move and the mouse to aim. This is the standard for most PC first-person shooters. - Jumping: Press
Spacebar
to jump. You can press it twice to perform a "double jump". - Dodging: Quickly tap a movement key (
A
,W
,S
, orD
) twice to dodge in that direction. A "dodge jump" (dodging and then jumping immediately) can cover great distances. - Weapons: You start with a basic weapon and can pick up more powerful ones around the map. Each weapon has a primary fire (left-click) and a secondary fire (right-click).
Understanding Gametypes
While there are many custom gametypes, here are the core modes you will encounter:
- Deathmatch (DM): A classic free-for-all. The goal is simple: kill everything that moves. The player with the highest score (frag count) at the end wins.
- Team Deathmatch (TDM): Similar to Deathmatch, but you are on a team (Red or Blue). Work with your teammates to kill the enemy team. The team with the highest combined score wins.
- Capture the Flag (CTF):
A team-based game of offense and defense. The goal is to infiltrate the enemy's base, grab their flag, and carry it back to your own base to score a point. To score, your team's flag must be safely at its starting point.
- Offense: Focus on attacking the enemy base and grabbing the flag. Speed and map knowledge are key.
- Defense: Stay near your own base to protect your flag from being taken by the enemy team.
- Midfield: Control the center of the map, gather power-ups, and support both your offense and defense.
- Teamwork is Everything: Cover your flag carrier, communicate enemy positions, and coordinate your attacks to be successful. The Translocator is a vital tool for advanced movement and quick captures.
- Monster Match (MM):
A cooperative mode where you team up with other players to survive against increasingly difficult waves of monsters. It is a true test of teamwork and survival skill.
- Survival: The primary goal is to stay alive. Stick together with your teammates and cover each other's backs.
- Weapon Choice: Different weapons excel against different monsters. Use the Flak Cannon for crowd control and the Minigun or Rocket Launcher for larger, tougher enemies.
- Progression: In many versions of Monster Match, you earn money for kills which can be used to buy new weapons, ammo, and health between rounds. Manage your resources wisely!
- Siege (SG):
An objective-based, asymmetrical gametype. One team attacks and the other defends a series of objectives on the map. After the round, teams switch sides. The winning team is the one that completes all the objectives the fastest.
- Objectives: Each Siege map is different. Objectives can include destroying a generator, pressing a switch, capturing a control point, or escorting a vehicle.
- Coordination: Attackers must work together in a coordinated push to break through defenses. Defenders must identify choke points and fortify them.
- Strategy: Unlike other modes, killing is secondary to completing the objectives. A well-planned strategy is more important than individual frag counts.
